Immigration

It’s time to protect the people of Albuquerque.

The City of Albuquerque has instituted strong policies to be an immigrant friendly city in the past, but now there is more the City can do to unite and protect our neighbors in the face of Trump's attacks.

Alex is the son of an immigrant, an ally to mixed-status families, and a prosecutor who has fought for justice for citizens and non-citizens alike.

As a nearly ten-year veteran of the Department of Justice, Alex is uniquely positioned to defend against federal overreach and assert basic Constitutional guarantees.

We're made less safe when neighbors are afraid that masked men may kidnap them with no way of knowing who they are. Our workplaces become less stable when our coworkers are unsure if the work day could be interrupted by a warrantless raid.

Alex knows how to safeguard our freedoms, uphold the values that make Albuquerque resilient and united, and most importantly, build a local government that can stand on its own two feet without having to bend the knee to the President.

Protect our Neighbors

As Mayor, Alex will fight against federal overreach and abuse to protect the people of Albuquerque, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, or how many tattoos one has.

Protect Our Constitional Rights

The people of Albuquerque will not spend our limited and much-needed local resources to make up for federal failures to govern

As Mayor, Alex will defend our Constitutional rights and refuse to waste local resources on initiatives which are not linked to our safety and prosperity.

Protect our Communities

As Mayor, Alex will ensure that City resources are used to build trust and safety, not fear and division, so that victims and witnesses of crime and communities as a whole have confidence in the institutions that serve them.

Action Plans

  • Establish a legal defense fund and a network of pro-bono attorneys to support individuals unfairly targeted by the federal government, ensuring access to qualified legal representation for those who need it most

  • Monitor, analyze, and issue guidance on federal Executive Orders that threaten local autonomy or civil liberties

  • Join in lawsuits with the NM DOJ when the rights of Albuquerque residents are implicated

  • Build a network of legal experts, advocates, and community organizations to ensure our city is prepared for any challenge to our rights

  • APD officers long worked aside federal partners to address local priorities like violent crime, humantrafficking, and drugtraffickers. They will not be commandeered to target people who pose no demonstrable danger to our community

  • Support victims and witnesses, regardless of immigration status to report crimes and show up to testify against their abusers

  • Educate all residents about basic Constitutional rights and our commitment to protect those rights, regardless of status

  • Engage in public discourse, local and national collaboratives focused on immigration policy

  • Form coalitions with other cities, civil rights organizations, and community organizations pursuing a humane, Constitutional, and practical approach to the failure of the federal government to provide a functional legal immigration system

Petition to the City.

In early July, Alex Uballez petitioned the city to do more on immigration, outlining steps the city can take to better protect Albuquerque residents.

1. Require ICE agents visibly identify themselves and ban the use of masks for immigration agents operating within city limits.

2. Require local law enforcement to verify federal agents’ identity when and if deployed to sites of enforcement activity Identities

3.Protect our schools, churches, and hospitals by formally naming them 'sensitive locations.'

4.Facilitate virtual access to services and court.

5.Create city emergency response infrastructure to respond to families in crisis impacted by ICE enforcement

6. Publicly fund deportation defense. Due process shouldn’t depend on your income.
7. Expand current “Know Your Rights” efforts to a full public relations educational campaign

8. Protect all of our city data—no sharing without a judge’s order

9. Require notification from federal agencies if they are to conduct enforcement in Albuquerque.

10.Make it safer to go to work by mandating training on how to protect employees' rights when responding to raids for any company that does business with the city.

11. Pass an Immigrant Civil Rights Act to affirm citywide protections for all, regardless of status

12. Direct city services to recover and reconnect the property, personal belongings, and pets of those taken by ICE to family members.
