The City of Albuquerque has instituted strong policies to be an immigrant friendly city in the past, but now there is more the City can do to unite and protect our neighbors in the face of Trump's attacks.
Alex is the son of an immigrant, an ally to mixed-status families, and a prosecutor who has fought for justice for citizens and non-citizens alike.
As a nearly ten-year veteran of the Department of Justice, Alex is uniquely positioned to defend against federal overreach and assert basic Constitutional guarantees.
We're made less safe when neighbors are afraid that masked men may kidnap them with no way of knowing who they are. Our workplaces become less stable when our coworkers are unsure if the work day could be interrupted by a warrantless raid.
Alex knows how to safeguard our freedoms, uphold the values that make Albuquerque resilient and united, and most importantly, build a local government that can stand on its own two feet without having to bend the knee to the President.
As Mayor, Alex will fight against federal overreach and abuse to protect the people of Albuquerque, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, or how many tattoos one has.
The people of Albuquerque will not spend our limited and much-needed local resources to make up for federal failures to govern
As Mayor, Alex will defend our Constitutional rights and refuse to waste local resources on initiatives which are not linked to our safety and prosperity.
As Mayor, Alex will ensure that City resources are used to build trust and safety, not fear and division, so that victims and witnesses of crime and communities as a whole have confidence in the institutions that serve them.
Establish a legal defense fund and a network of pro-bono attorneys to support individuals unfairly targeted by the federal government, ensuring access to qualified legal representation for those who need it most
Monitor, analyze, and issue guidance on federal Executive Orders that threaten local autonomy or civil liberties
Join in lawsuits with the NM DOJ when the rights of Albuquerque residents are implicated
APD officers long worked aside federal partners to address local priorities like violent crime, humantrafficking, and drugtraffickers. They will not be commandeered to target people who pose no demonstrable danger to our community
Support victims and witnesses, regardless of immigration status to report crimes and show up to testify against their abusers
Educate all residents about basic Constitutional rights and our commitment to protect those rights, regardless of status
Engage in public discourse, local and national collaboratives focused on immigration policy
Form coalitions with other cities, civil rights organizations, and community organizations pursuing a humane, Constitutional, and practical approach to the failure of the federal government to provide a functional legal immigration system
In early July, Alex Uballez petitioned the city to do more on immigration, outlining steps the city can take to better protect Albuquerque residents.
