It’s time to stand up for each other. Alex is the son of an immigrant, an ally to mixed-status families, and a prosecutor who has fought for justice for citizens and non-citizens alike. Alex served under Presidents Obama, Trump, and Biden, and has seen how federal power can be wielded for justice or weaponized for oppression.
As a nearly ten-year veteran of the Department of Justice, Alex is also uniquely positioned to defend against federal overreach and assert basic Constitutional guarantees, safeguarding our freedoms and upholding the values that make Albuquerque resilient and united.
The federal government has arrested, detained, and removed to foreign countries U.S. citizens and immigrants alike, without basic dignity, transparency, or due process. As Mayor, Alex will defend the people of Albuquerque, regardless of where you come from, what you look like, or how many tattoos you have, against federal overreach and abuse.
Establish a legal defense fund and a network of pro-bono attorneys to support individuals unfairly targeted by the federal government, ensuring access to qualified legal representation for those who need it most
Monitor, analyze, and issue guidance on federal Executive Orders that threaten local autonomy or civil liberties
Join in lawsuits with the NM DOJ when the rights of Albuquerque residents are implicated
Just like the responsibility to create a functional legal immigration system, immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. The people of Albuquerque will not spend our limited and much-needed local official resources to make up for federal failures to govern or to intelligently prioritize enforcement. As Mayor, Alex will defend our Constitutional right to chart our own course and not waste resources on initiatives which are not linked to our safety and prosperity.
APD officers long worked aside federal partners to address local priorities like violent crime, humantrafficking, and drugtraffickers. They will not be commandeered to target people who pose no demonstrable danger to our community
It’s time for a transit network that connects our city and offers a true alternative to driving. Public transit and walkability builds community, powers property values, attracts talent, creates jobs, cuts transportation costs, is healthier, saves the environment, ensures access for elderly, poor, and children. By taking care of our bus drivers first, we can increase the frequency and reliability of our transit system. By building infrastructure for bikes and pedestrians, we can build community spaces and reduce congestion. As Mayor, Alex will get us where we need to go, quicker, and safer.
Support victims and witnesses, regardless of immigration status to report crimes and show up to testify against their abusers
Educate all residents about basic Constitutional rights and our commitment to protect those rights, regardless of status
Engage in public discourse, local and national collaboratives focused on immigration policy
Form coalitions with other cities, civil rights organizations, and community organizations pursuing a humane, Constitutional, and practical approach to the failure of the federal government to provide a functional legal immigration system
